The city of Chachapoyas it’s found in the eastern Andes
mountains of northern Peru, at an altitude of 7645 feet.
It has a temperate climate, with an average temperature
of 65o F, and moderate rainfall.
In the city's environs you'll find archeological
monuments of great interest, which were built by the
Chachapoya (or Sachapuyo) culture. The Chachapoya built
imposing citadels on nearby mountaintops, to take
maximum advantage of the available arable lands.
The most important archeological sites are Kuelap,
Karajia, Pueblo de los Muertos (The City of the Dead),
and the Revash Mausoleum. The Chachapoyas area remains
unspoiled by overvisitation, and is ideal for those that
prefer something away from the bustle of traditional
tourist areas.
Drive to Chachapoyas. The trip takes aprox. 11 hours
(includes about 8 stops on the road for toilet and
photographs). Boxed-lunch on the route. Arrival to the
hotel in Chachapoyas. Dinner at the hotel.

Full day excursion to
Kuelap.
Kuelap is an ancient fortress built on the knife edge of
a precipitously steep ridge. It was an important
political, religious, administrative, and military
center for the pre-Incan Chachapoya culture. The
fortress is surrounded by an immense and impressive wall
almost 2000 feet in length. The gates, or main
entrances, are uniquely constructed resembling narrow
walled passageways that continue to narrow as they reach
upwards and into the fortress. This brilliant design
served to funnel and narrow any column of attackers down
to just 2 men wide, so they could easily be killed as
they tried to enter, effectively making Kuelap
insurmountable to its enemies.
Lunch in the typical village of María.
Dinner and lodging at the selected hotel in Chachapoyas.
Village of the Dead.
This is an archeological site located in the middle of a
steep cliff face. It was a site dedicated to an
ancestral worship cult of the governing elite of the
Chachapoya culture. Its peculiar statues, variously a
rounded or squared off type of decorated funeral
sarcophagi, cover an area of nearly two and a half
acres.
Dinner and lodging at Hotel Estancia El Chillo.

Revash.
The Revash Tombs are beautifully colorful structures
located on a shelf or platform high up on a cliff. The
cliff walls in the shelf area are decorated with
geometric designs representing animal figures. The visit
includes a two hours soft hike to the mausoleum.
Boxed-lunch in Revash.
Continue the trip to Leimebamba. Visit to the Mallqui
Institution Mummy Museum. The Mallqui Institution

cloud forest a day's walk from Leimebamba.
